Adeline was born to Louis and Elsie (Ernst) Steinwand on October 15, 1936 in Merricourt, ND. She was later adopted by Nels and Tillie Veland. This provided a large family to surround her throughout her life. She always said that she didn’t have just a family tree, but a family “jungle.’ She enjoyed trying to explain how all of these people are her family. It didn’t matter which branch they came from or how they came to be part of the family. They were just her family.

Adeline overcame many challenges in her life, starting with the loss of her parents, living in an orphanage and being adopted. She graduated from high school and married a South Dakota farmer. She had five children and embodied the true spirit of a pioneer in the rural farmland. She overcame many health challenges throughout her life, and never stopped fighting for her family and her accomplishments. Adeline went on to further her education at Presentation College and graduated with an associate degree in Social Work. She worked tirelessly serving others while taking care of her family. She was a driving force in her children’s education and supported them in all their numerous and diverse endeavors.

Adeline was a member of Savo Lutheran Church in rural Frederick, SD. She always found time to pursue her hobbies. Adeline was an excellent seamstress and made all of her family’s clothes. She loved to craft: making jewelry, crocheting, painting pottery, knitting, and various others. She was also known for her gardening and flower arrangements. She had extensive gardens at the farmhouse near Frederick and continued with this passion when she moved to Aberdeen. She loved to read and always had a book nearby. Adeline was an avid collector of antiques and turned her passion into a business: Adeline’s Antiques. Her sign was a landmark for many on the corner of County Roads 14 and 5. She was especially known for collecting rooster and chicken memorabilia, and displaying them throughout her home. She was a baker and cook, making many Scandinavian and German dishes and passing those traditions to her family. She always made time for her friends and family. Adeline always found a way to keep in touch. She also embraced technology to communicate with her family and friends. Adeline lived in the Ellendale, ND, and Frederick/Aberdeen area most of her life and still has many friends and neighbors from these areas.

Grateful for having shared Adeline’s life are her husband of nearly 65 years, Fred; and her five children: Steve (Jean) Karjalainen, Joan (Kyle) Westfall, Kathy Karjalainen, Sandy (Greg) Redshaw, and Rick Karjalainen. She absolutely adored her grandchildren and great-grandchildren: Neil (Lyn) Karjalainen and their children: Tyler, Alek, Lia, and Eli Karjalainen, Craig Karjalainen, Elise Westfall, and Alexis, Jared and Wyatt Redshaw. She is also survived by her sisters-in-law: Pat Karjalainen, Sonia Karjalainen and Ruth Karjalainen; and numerous special nieces and nephews that she always thought of as her “own”.

Preceding Adeline in death are her parents: Louis and Elsie Steinwand; her adopted parents: Nels and Tillie Veland; brother: Cliff (Fern) Steinwand; her half-brother: Alex (Erna & Vi) Steinwand; half-sisters: Mary Veland, Polly (Fred) Dunlap, and Tilly (Lee) Manly; adopted brothers: Ernie Veland, Bob Veland, Norman Vela nd, and Joe Veland; nephew: Larry Veland; and great-niece: Leah Veland.
